Dak Prescott has telling response to question about contract extension

Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys have supposedly been negotiating a contract extension this offseason, but it does not sound like there has been much progress between the two sides.

Prescott was asked by a reporter on Wednesday if there has “been any movement on the extension at this point.” The quarterback essentially confirmed that nothing significant has happened.

“Not necessarily. Obviously, still conversations,” Prescott said. “I’m aware of what Jerry (Jones) said and everything he said is dead on. Communication has been back and forth, but…yeah.”

Earlier this offseason, Prescott and the Cowboys agreed to a minor restructure that lowered the quarterback’s 2024 salary cap number from nearly $60 million to $55.5 million. That might be all that happens between the two sides, as one report claimed there has been no indication the Cowboys will sign Prescott to an extension.

Prescott is in the final year of a four-year, $160 million deal. The Cowboys have won 12 games in each of the last three seasons but have only one playoff win during that span. Head coach Mike McCarthy is also in the final year of his deal, and it probably is not a coincidence that neither the coach or quarterback have received extensions.

Judging by the recent comments Prescott made about his contract, it is possible that Jones and the Cowboys are content to see how things play out in 2024 before trying to work out a new deal with their franchise quarterback.
