Hail, hail, the gang's all here for Kentucky Derby 150 -- well, all except Bob. There's Brad and Chad and of course Todd. And don't forget the Coach!

Oh, I didn't mention 0-for-25 Steve, whose son may win a Derby before he does.

The most exciting two minutes (or so) in sports will launch this year's Triple Crown trail on Saturday in the shadow of the Twin Spires. Though Friday's weather looks downright "sloppy," Saturday should dawn much drier and hopefully provide a fast track for twenty 3-year-old colts hoping prove their mettle over the Churchill Downs oval.

"Sixty percent of the time, he wins every time," Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher/Anchorman quipped earlier this week, referring to juvenile champion Fierceness, who either obliterates his competition or finds trouble and throws in the towel.

Sierra Leone has all the right pieces, but he'll have to navigate a bunch of traffic with his late-running style, and his trainer Chad Brown has gone out of his way all week to talk up his other entrant, 30-1 longshot Domestic Product.

Brad Cox is a Louisville native hoping to experience a Derby win this year (he saddled Mandaloun to run second in the 2021 Kentucky Derby, and was later declared the winner when Bob Baffert's horse Medina Spirit was disqualified – and Churchill officials have not allowed Baffert to run in the Derby since). Cox saddles two this year: Just A Touch and Catching Freedom.

"Coach" D. Wayne Lukas brings 88 years of Kentucky Derby experience (and four Derby wins) to the table with his entrant, Just Steel, while the winningest trainer in Thoroughbred racing history, Steve Asmussen, is still trying to win his first Kentucky Derby, this year with Track Phantom. Asmussen's son, Keith Asmussen, will ride the Lukas-trained colt.

There's also plenty of international intrigue with two entrants from Japan, both undefeated thus far, as well as a handful of blue collar colts with once-in-a-lifetime hopes and dreams tied to their tails.

Before the Run for the Roses, of course, a couple of big cards are on tap at Churchill Downs. The 1 1/8-mile Kentucky Oaks will serve as the centerpiece for a 13-race Friday program that features seven stakes worth a combined $5.25 million, then the Run for the Roses will highlight a 14-race program that features nine stakes races worth a combined $10.75 million.

Also on Saturday, perhaps the top 3-year-old in the world will take to the turf in Europe when Aidan O'Brien saddles City of Troy in the 2,000 Guineas. The fillies' contest, the 1,000 Guineas, will be held Sunday.

Juddmonte’s Idiomatic, who won eight of nine starts in 2023 topped by a victory in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1), earned the Eclipse Award as the champion older mare of 2023. A winner of her past five starts, including three Grade 1's for trainer Brad Cox, Idiomatic will be making her 2024 debut under Florent Geroux from post 4.
